Noah's Ark
If no one believed in him, would God exist? Is he something that only lives in our minds?
There was a time in the Bible when no one believed in God; or, if they did believe, they didn't care about him. I think that was a gross understimization on their part. Whether he existed in their minds or not, their blatent ignorance towards him stirred up his anger.
One man, that's all God wanted. Just one man and one woman to keep the human race alive, to repopulate the earth after he had rained down his wrath on it.
He found them. A man and his wife who were so far from perfect it fairly disgusted him; but who he knew loved him and would teach their children and grandchildren to love him.
I personally don't think Noah was that great of a person. The whole world was wicked, and if wickedness was socially acceptable I imagine Noah took part in a lot of it much of the time. I bet he had lots of friends, and was a very likeable guy. I kind of doubt he condemned anyone for what they did against God. I'm sure he laughed at the dirty jokes, got drunk with all his friends, and I wouldn't be surprised if he cheated on his wife a few times...
Why else would he be so ridiculed when he did as the Lord asked of him? If it was normal for him to be different then I'm sure the people around him would have just said, "Oh that crazy Noah." But I get the impression it was a far bigger deal than that.
And so that brings me back to wondering what on earth God said to Noah to convince him to build this monsterous boat. I can guarantee that Noah didn't just "get the feeling" that it was the right thing for him to do; especially since no one had seen rain in years, and there really were no oceans around. And for some reason I have my doubts that it was a "still small voice" I'm thinking that there is no way Noah would have really gotten it without an audible word from God.
I mean, really! I talk with God everyday. Constantly. I hear him; the still small voice, I get my fiar share of feelings too. We hold conversations. He is very real and evident in my life; but no way am I building a gigantic ship, or going to rescue slaves from scary dudes with lots of big guns, or walking around a whole city seven times in one day without a very loud, very audible voice. If he wants to throw in the flaming, un-burning bush too, that definatly wouldn't hurt his causes at all.
Anyways, so Noah is building this boat, for God only knows what reasons, literally; and everyone is laughing at him. He has obviously told them that God told him to do it, none believe him; or none believe in God. Obviously just because they don't believe doesn't mean he doesn't exist, because a few years later God destroys the world. Everything. The plants, the animals, the people - and they didn't even fully believe he was there and could destroy them.... SHOCKER FOR THEM!
It makes me kinda wonder... The earth had only been around for a few hundred years... and already the people were so bad that God couldn't even handle it. God can't stand sin, so these people must have been sinning a lot, cause God loves us and if he was willing to destroy something he loves so much because of the sin they did then there must have been a lot of sin. And now, after the world has been around for a few more thousands of years I can only imagine how much more wicked it has become around here. We are constantly coming up with different ways to offend God.
I'm just thankful he promised to never destroy the whole earth with a flood again... but come on, there a lot of other ways that he could destroy us...
